The Power of Designed Experiments
Statistics in developing countries tends to focus on issues arising from government requirements for enumeration and characterization of populations. In contrast, I call attention to the power of designed experiments. I follow a very simple example with a vignette of discovery. This vignette illustrates the power of employing a continual process of hypothesis development and testing. I conclude with warnings against reliance on classical randomized trials, because they can waste time and resources without adequate attention to exploration and hypothesis generation.
